Cost

Total cost of conversion as installed by a DIYer. $5.4k-$6.7k with a low mileage used engine, $7k-8k with a brand new engine. The kit itself starts at $4830 of that currently.

Our philosophy is to never provide parts that can be purchased off-the-shelf. It is cheaper and allows maintenance independence, only the parts we must handle come through us. In addition to the kit from us, you will need to purchase the required parts shown on the required parts list in the documentation section.

The Bostig engine conversion system enables the installation of a new or used Ford Zetec engine into 83-91 VW vanagons. It's not just an engine swap kit, it is also comprised of all of the documentation, information, and standardized procedures to make installing one of our conversions the lowest risk, highest value option for re-powering your van possible.

A chain is only as strong as it's weakest link

Unique in the marketplace, our approach and philosophy addresses all the links in the chain from initial research and prepurchase information, all the way through to long-term ownership. The 2010 is the 3rd major release of the Bostig conversion that builds on our continuously improving design and manufacturing capabilities to deliver the simplest, most reliable, most complete, and user friendly conversion available. If you can follow basic instructions, and use basic hand tools you can complete the conversion yourself. We’ve developed solutions for more aspects of the conversion process than are even recognized by our competition, and as a result we are the only ones building a complete solution to the problem set, and we do so with greater care and precision than anyone in the marketplace.

The most mature and actively developed conversion

The Bostig 2010 is the culmination of tens of thousands of hours of engineering, research, testing, manufacturing, operating, and supporting. Unlike any other conversion, the entire Bostig development effort has always been under the ownership and control of a single entity.  All of the experience and information from every step in the process (including those done by customers) feeds back into development and support efforts. The result is better consistency, fewer bugs, and avoidance of repeated error and re-learning; Less to learn, less to think about, and less to worry about.

Our goals for the conversion

Our engine conversion system was designed around a specific set of goals that address some of the problems of other conversions and offer new benefits to owners. We believe that while there are other engine options out there, and we may not satisfy every owner (we're doubtful for instance that a die-hard diesel fan will consider our option), we will find warm reception by many enthusiasts that have been waiting for one conversion to address all of their concerns about moving to a new engine while providing a system of unparalleled quality of construction and design. Below is the set of primary objectives adopted during development of our conversion, which have become its chief characteristics:

  • Best engineered option available
  • Best built option available
  • Ultra-low cost of ownership
  • Power and power potential
  • Wide torque band
  • Reliability
  • Efficiency
  • Availability
  • Simplicity
  • Completeness
  • Options

The Zetec is a European and North American made distributorless Dual Overhead Cam( DOHC) two liter inline four cylinder engine developed by Ford Motors and Cosworth Ltd. of the UK. The 2.0L Zetec was used in the Ford Focus, and as such has reached production levels that no other option has (for instance more zetec engines were produced than the entirety of all engines and displacements that Subaru produced from the 15 years 90-2005).

The Focus is a "world car" and is sold in every market that Ford is present in, making it easy for the Focus to become one of the best selling cars in the world (it outsold the VW Golf in 2001 making it the best selling car on the planet that year, 64% of those were zetecs). The Zetec is extremely well designed and well made. We were surprised many times along the way by small, and not-so-small design features that help make the Zetec such a wonderful little engine. Its split case to help reduce NVH , its Non-interference design, and its mechanical simplicity are a few features that make the Zetec a rugged engine and tenacious performer.

There are very few inline 4 engines that are as simple and trouble free as the zetec, and no horizontally opposed engines that are.

Confidence in your vehicle

New confidence in your vehicle comes from increased reliability and drivability. In any system the best reliability comes from maintaining that system to its specification and tolerances.

Most engine conversions function great when everything is within spec, as they should, but customers often forget that what happens when something goes wrong can be much more important. It's when things go wrong that the real tests of robustness and preparation in design and forethought are performed. Unfortunately more often than not, those in the position to minimize risk, impact, and cost of potential problems at design time don’t (just ask BP). We do.

Fewer hoses, fewer wires, engines that are the simplest, most reliable, and prevalent one can put in a vanagon, and the fact that we avoid specialized knowledge and tool requirements for dealing with engine internals are all results of our design philosophy. The Bostig 2010 is the easiest, fastest, and least expensive conversion to maintain proactively or repair reactively.

Confidence in drivability comes from being able to do something as simple as merge onto the highway without fear of impending doom. It also comes from being able to enhance the original design concept of the vanagon which is to achieve great efficiency, capability, and versatility with a lightweight powertrain that smartly employs gearing and relatively small powerplants; not heavy components, brute force, and the fuel/performance costs associated with them.

Confidence in your investment

  • All of your eggs aren't in one basket, no component or subsystem costs more than $850 including a brand new engine. Most alternatives have engines that cost into the several thousand dollar range... JUST for the engine(which can only be bought used or rebuilt, not new). Since you're only as strong as your weakest link, you can also be confident that because not all of your conversion dollar goes into one thing, the other links in the chain can be made better, as is the case with the Bostig 2010. We address links in the chain that other conversions completely ignore. One third of Bostig customers have been through an unsuccessful alternative(other conversion or rebuild) before finally coming to us. The money spent on those unsuccessful alternatives would typically offset most of the cost of the Bostig, and speaks nothing to time and aggravation.
  • Bostig backed - 5yr/50k warranty - longest of any engine swap kit available, we are the only dedicated vanagon conversion specialist with primary support and engineering resources in the market, we are not a garage, jobber, restoration shop, or retailer that also sell conversions compiled from other's parts
  • The only conversion that has an actual production model/specification. There is no such thing as "The [insert other conversion here] conversion", only things like "Dave's subaru conversion" or "Bill's inline VW conversion" since there are as many variations and combinations as there are installers, and no two are identical. With us, there is "The Bostig 2010 Conversion". You can be confident in the consistency we achieve, which means you can avoid much of the risk associated with process, part, information, and individual differences during install and maintenance.
  • Extensibility/Upgradability/Modularity. The Bostig 2010 is the only conversion for which everything is engineered to allow modular upgrade paths to new options and add-ons for painless and built-in future-proofing.

Confidence in yourself

Confidence can be a self-fulfilling prophecy as those without it may fail because they lack it and those with it may succeed because they have it, rather than because of an innate ability or advantage. Since it is important, we help you build it.
  • Build your confidence by learning faster and easier with the best support in the market. The best written documentation, video tutorials, and phone based support are part of the bostig conversion system. With more supported installs than any other conversion for vanagons, you get guided access to the most complete and accurate information on any conversion available.
  • Build your confidence with our unmatched record of successful installs. We've had blind individuals, high-school students, senior citizens, and even folks that had never changed their oil complete the conversion successfully.
  • You might not think so starting out, but once completed, you'll not only have a drool inducing engine compartment you won't have to see often, you'll  have had enough guided interaction with the whole system to be able to fully maintain and service it yourself. Put your van into good hands you can trust, yours.

Realized value

  • Realized value comes from ability to use what is it you've done/bought, not just own it. Bostig customers enjoy less time wading through posts and answers to questions online trying to judge which ones to believe. Instead they are successful in maintaining their project timelines and get on the road more successfully and quickly than if they did not have a trusted, single point-of-contact, wealth of correct answers at their disposal.
  • Long useful life comes from the highest quality parts in both construction and design. We have the only dedicated fulltime engineering resources in the market, and all Bostig parts are made in the USA or Canada.

Completeness

  • The only conversion system, with engineered engine mechanicals, engine management, and operator information. The other kits stop at engine mechanicals, and/or cheat engine management, and offer little or no documentation at all.

Time Savings

Time might not always equal money, but it certainly has value. Bostig saves you time with:
  • Simplicity, which translates into less to learn, which in turn means it's faster/easier to master.
  • Relevancy and accuracy of acquired knowledge managed for you. With anything else it is your responsibility to determine good from bad, and valid from invalid on your own, which takes time and research with no guarantees.
  • Plug and play - The only conversion available with a purpose built 100% brand new plug and play(no splicing) wiring harness.
  • The only conversion available that can be completed with 100% brand new parts if desired, so sourcing can be faster. Even with salvage parts, we show you how to avoid setting foot in a yard, and completely avoid removing a single part from a donor/salvage car yourself.

Education

It is simplicity that allows us to embrace the "Teach someone to fish vs. give them a fish" philosophy. Not often considered, the type of fish is vitally important. If it's a simple and common food fish, you can teach someone to fish and the proverb is true they will be able to eat for life. However if it's perhaps a deepwater, scarce, or sport fish that you need special knowledge and equipment to catch, teaching someone to fish for it may not be practical. As a result there may not be anybody that offers lessons, but will offer to sell you that fish because the effort/information to catch it yourself is hard enough to collect and use that it has great value. If you want that type of fish you'll have to pay for it or figure out how to catch it yourself. Both can be more expensive, and have lower value since on the one hand your investment in figuring it all out yourself is only valid for one instance(yours), and if you paid for it you likely won't be able to obtain one ever again without the same investment if you for example happen to drop the fish overboard. We chose the most common and simplest to catch fish out there, and provide the lessons.
  • Includes the most extensive and highest quality written and video based documentation for any engine swap kit, for any application.
  • We offer accurate and relevant information. Bad information can be worse than no information, and it becomes a common pitfall for conversions without centralized support, feedback, or experience. We avoid the scenario where the person least able to make the correct judgement(inexperienced installer) is left to decide what should happen, and what path should be taken.  Learn what you need to learn, and learn the correct information the first time.
  • Knowing how to properly install a part can be as important as the part itself. We know this, and provide documentation to ensure it.
  • Knowing where/how to source a part can be as important as the part itself. We know this, and provide documentation to ensure it too.

(Click on any heading bar below to expand/collapse)

Simplicity

We started with the simplest engine you can put in a vanagon. We then made sure to keep it simple. No other conversion did this, or does this. This is one of the reasons there is a cottage industry for installing Subaru powerplants, TDIs, etc into vanagons. Specialist shops have grown not because it is easy and simple to install those conversions, but the opposite. The knowledge, capability, experience, and effort required to do those conversions correctly is not widely available, attainable, or appealing to the average owner, so they can charge for it. The very same thing that makes some of these installers the gurus that they are, as well as craftsmen, is the fact that it is not simple to achieve their results. With us it is. Only the Bostig 2010 was designed to be easy and simple not just for install, but maintenance too, for almost anyone with a vanagon.

5year/50K mile warranty

The Bostig 2010 has the longest warranty of any conversion kit available, and has been proving itself ever since the first prototype was up and running in 2004. Not only is our engineering superior, our build quality is too, and we stand behind it.

Based on a world engine

The Bostig 2010 is the only conversion system that has an engine selected not only for its size and power levels, but also because it is reliable, and widely available.  Scale can bring big benefits in customer value. Paying for scarcity does not provide customer value. Unfortunately as vanagon owners most of us know the trials of NLA parts and specialty vendors. We didn't want that for a replacement engine. We wanted to enjoy not just a better situation, but one of the best possible. The zetec is one of the most available engines on planet earth. It is this fact that makes converting to one carry with it an ecosystem of additional benefits that customers don't always consider.  How big is the difference in scale really?

Ford UK made 3.5 million zetec engines in its Bridgend plant alone, zetecs were also made in Cologne and Chihuahua.  Subaru engine totals for every engine of all families they made from 1990 to 2005 do not total the bridgend single plant output of zetecs. In 2003 Subaru broke its previous all-time annual sales record when they sold 186,819 vehicles (all models/brands) in the US. In 2003, Ford sold 3,483,719 vehicles (all models/brands) and 229,353 of JUST the Focus model in the US, which is only one of the vehicles the zetec came in. People in vanagonland often forget (not coincidentally because they also happen to be the target demographic of Subaru marketing and advertising) that Subaru is not a large car company, with low sales most of which are highly concentrated in the Northwest and the Northeast.  As a result, the scale is not the same, nor is the support infrastructure surrounding it, which is all reflected in pricing and availability of both engines and parts, especially if you travel outside the Northwest or Northeast.

Not based on a rebuilt engine

We accept a simple fact: all else equal, rebuilt engines are never as reliable as unsealed factory, mass-manufactured engines.   It is a common mistake to understand a rebuilt engine as "new" or as good as new.  It is another mistake to view a rebuild as intrinsically good because you are rebuilding something and not contributing to waste or a "throw away" culture, you're already so far ahead of the game by choosing to keep your vanagon on the road and not buy new, that you have plenty of Karma credit to think a little about your credit card and your own good.  Rebuilds used to be the norm simply because the engines themselves were too expensive to purchase in their entirety. Rebuilding is still commonplace in circles where the engines are rare or expensive, and many large engines are designed for this express capability. Unfortunately a proper rebuild is also very easy to screw up, and also unfortunately many folks in the auto mainstream and aftermarket that are "professionals" shouldn't be allowed near customer vehicles or engines.

One excellent analogy to something as invasive as an engine rebuild is major surgery.  Despite what the surgeons will have you believe, it will never be as good as pre-condition no matter who the surgeons are. Engine rebuilds are the same, the surgeons will tell you it's as good as new, and even provide a warranty (read the fine print it won't be as rosy as you think either).  For our bodies you can't get a replacement. For your vanagon you can.  Instead of paying your way out of a bad situation into a less bad situation, take the opportunity and move into a good or great situation. You can do this by sticking with a new or used factory sealed engine (meaning the head has never been removed after factory installation). Rebuilds typically fail much earlier than sealed factory engines.  No matter who the rebuilder is, they do not have the kind of capability or consistency that the original manufacturer does down to even the most basic levels of metallic composition of the constituent parts.

Engine management

We are the only conversion manufacturer that matches engine management firmware to our conversion hardware. Other providers counter our capability with claims like "The automakers spent millions on development, and it should be kept stock", and then of course they modify the intake, exhaust, cooling, even engine internals and systems to make it fit in a vanagon. But one of the things that make a stock system good is the fact that the tune matches the actual hardware implemented. Like the OEMs, we follow this approach. Vendors that do not are either displaying a fundamental lack of understanding of the important relationship between the ECU programming and the hardware, or they're trying to excuse themselves from lacking this capability entirely, and hoping their customers don't know any better. Our holistic approach is the proper way of implementing a powerplant from one vehicle to another. You *can* run on a stock tune and it may be fine, but our customers are seeking our expertise in their purchase, and with that responsibility we must provide what is best, not simply what the customer asks to pay for.  We offer more than what is required to make a sale, we offer the best capabilities given the limits of technology and the money involved.  Our update capability allows customers to download new tunes from us as they are improved over time and to offer new capabilities like e85, or to allow for bolt-on operation of our upcoming turbocharger kit.

E85 ethanol out of the box

As a result of our engine management update capabilities, we can now offer e85 ethanol operation right out of the box. We are the first to offer this functionality to conversion customers, which will allow for not only a dramatic reduction in vehicle emissions(95% decrease in hydrocarbon emissions alone) but also customers can benefit from e85 propagation initiatives which usually equal e85 fuel at prices much lower than gasoline. Additionally, with the addition of a turbo or supercharger the real benefits of e85 and it's knock suppression capabilities come alive in the form of substantial increases in power and torque, while only taking a 14% or so fuel consumption hit vs. gasoline in the zetec.

High speed logging/Analysis

We offer customers full high-speed datalogging and log analysis as standard. No other conversion offers either, they may offer OBDII(low speed, generic parameters) functionality, but we offer unmatched functionality in both of these areas. Normally you would find this only in top-of-the-line aftermarket engine management systems, but we do it with the bulletproof reliability of the factory ECU and engine management system. Once the conversion is up and running, we validate the operation of everything through datalog analysis. We are the only conversion providers with the ability to offer this, and it ensures that your conversion is operating correctly so you don't have to guess, you'll know.

Pleases and calms rednecks, and some cops

Ever been at a gas station in the sticks and gotten a dirty look or have someone actually say/yell something like "Nice hippy-mobile pansy"? We have. But the conversion itself both takes them by surprise and caters to their prejudice by being branded Ford. It's the inverse of the prejudice that can elicit a scough or contempt from a VW purist at a campsite or event. While they are both equally ill-informed and irrational to be placing so much importance on automotive brands in 2010, it can make the redneck your buddy so use it! Whip off the decklid and say "it's powered by Ford" and the game changes... they might even want to come over and see, and maybe even say something awesome like "even though I'm a chevy man, that's slicker than snot!". This is a little known safety feature of the conversion when travelling in certain parts of the country.

We've also been pulled over while out testing and... ahem... perhaps bending some local traffic laws (specifically the ones that tell you how fast you're allowed to drive). The cop was equally intrigued when we told him we were out testing the Ford engine in the back, and he asked to see it. I really wish we had the dashcam video of that stop. He was so interested he forgot all about telling us why we got stopped, but he did tell us he was a Ford guy.

Q. How much does it cost? A. Total cost of conversion as installed by a DIYer. $5.4k-$6.7k with a low mileage used engine, $7k-8k with a brand new engine. The kit itself starts at $4830 of that currently.
Q. How long does it take to install? A. If you have everything collected/ready to go, 2-3 days. 3-5 days if your pace is on the slow side. The current record is 9 hours.
Q. What is included in the kit? A. Everything but the engine, engine peripherals, and parts in the Rock Auto order list (See support documentation).
Q. That's more expensive than other kits out there isn't it? A. If you consider something that any vendor calls a kit to be exactly the same as anything else called a kit, then yes. If you consider the completeness of the kit,  and the information/support provided to be of value then no. There is no equivalent engine swap kit this complete available for any other vehicle, let alone the vanagon.
Q. Do you do installs? A. No.  The kit is designed for the DIYer, and there is huge value in doing the conversion yourself and learning to be self-sufficient which happens as part of the conversion process. We *only* support the installer of the conversion, which could be a problem for you down the road if you have it installed by someone else but are unable to return to them for service/assistance.
Q. How can I get one? A. Simply complete the form on the top of this page, add to cart, and checkout.
After an unusually troublesome subaru EJ22 experience, I decided to take the leap and try something else.  I'm glad I did.  The Bostig kit is ridiculously complete - every nut, bolt, washer, and hose clamp is accounted for. The wiring harness, as advertised, is completely plug and play. No cutting, no splicing, no problem.  The conversion parts are high quality, and the ability to buy new Ford parts off the shelf at any parts store in the nation is fantastic.  I'm a simple hobby mechanic, and I found the conversion process to be amazingly easy and straightforward.  The install videos and documentation are very complete and the support of both the Bostig community and Jim and Brady are top notch.  And the end product is a pleasure to drive - smooth, quiet and reasonably powerful.  Having OBD II diagnositics with no errant trouble codes, the ability to log engine data to troubleshoot if necessary, and the power to re-flash your own ECU as the Bostig crew develops and releases new tunes is truly impressive and simply unheard of at this pricepoint.  The Bostig V2 is simply the best conversion option on the market today!
Robert L.

Bostig takes the curve out of "Learning Curve" and directs you down a
straight line. The zetec engine runs smooth and is very low
maintenace. One of the best parts of the conversion is that there are
no hidden costs. You know exactly what you are getting into.
Chris

As a professional mechanic and transmission builder for the last 30+ years, I have, in the course of my business, dealt with and driven almost every conversion out there. The Zetec was an obvious choice for me as soon as I drove one. The 2.0L - 130hp engne gets 20 mpg in my Syncro Westy. It is quiet, plenty powerful and amazingly simple (with a turbo upgrade available soon.) The kit is so utterly complete it puts any other setup to shame.
Daryl of AA Transaxle

Prior to doing the 2.0 conversion I had never changed my own oil, and couldn't tell a PS pump from an alternator.  Bostig assured me I could do this and they were right.  I turned every wrench myself on this conversion, learned a ton, and had a lot of fun.  Anytime I was unsure of something I'd just call Bostig and they'd walk me through the next step.  When I had issues, they helped me solve them.  Big questions, little questions, whatever.  The support is awesome and the difference in performance over stock is huge.
Tom E.

Bostig is the real deal. Trust me I'm a doctor. I had replaced my leaking head gaskets before but never done anything more major than that. I almost went the Subaru route but luckily found the Bostig boys and their Zetec conversion before I made what would have been for me a mistake. Now I have a reliable perfectly powered vanagon that I can easily maintain and for the first time in many years start enjoying again. Thanks Bostig.
Roy Mellor, MD

I now have about 18,000 miles on the Zetec.  My van runs like a normal car is supposed to run.  I change the oil every 3000 and just go.  We even have air conditioning.  And I’m under Bostig’s warranty! Believe me, if you are considering a new engine for your vanagon, you will be very happy with the Zetec.
Tim A. Asheville, NC

I am very satisfied with the Bostig conversion. The kit is well put together and of very high quality. The video and written instructions are straightforward and complete, and Bostig's support is second to none.  My van ('84 full Westy) is a completely different vehicle now. Reliable, clean running, and I can pass others while going uphill in 3rd gear! The total conversion time was about a week for me, but this includes about 3 days of engine compartment cleaning, undercoating, and other repairs while I was in there.
Robyn Lundstrom, Vancouver, BC, Canada.

Easy to learn/do. Great support group of Bostig employees and other customers. I recommend it to others often.

Support level is great. It can't be easy dealing with so many novices!

Parts are easy to find, engine is reliable and cheap to replace if the unthinkable happens. Kit is very complete. Docs are much improved since the 2.0 kit, but were pretty good even then.

Has the Power that VW should have put in it originally. Ease of locating parts for the motor.

Affordable, DIY even for a guy who knows nothing about engine repair / replacement, great customer service, love that i know am much more knowledgeable and capable in terms of diagnosing or repairing my own vehicle.

Without a doubt my entire experience with the Bostig conversion has been nothing but positive. Aside from the obvious improvements in performance and confidence in my van there are the added benefits of having learned an enormous amount about the vehicle and developing a whole new set of skills. So not only am I confident in the new engine but in my ability to fix problems that may arise. I found the Kit and customer support to be outstanding. The instructions were very clear and the videos were great back up. I never had any trouble getting through to someone on the phone line when I had questions and my questions were always answered clearly and concisely no matter how simple they may have been; a rarity these days for sure. I preach the virtues of this conversion to anyone who listens and sometimes to those that don't. I've been meaning to write a lengthy review to post on Samba but I just haven't had the time yet. I promise to get to it a soon as I can. You guys have a great product and an excellent attitude. Best of luck. kahlil

High quality components, well designed kit, excellent customer service, overall good documentation. I would highly recommend your conversion to anyone wanting to upgrade their Vanagon regardless of their skills level. The kit is within the skills level of virtually anyone with a desire to take their time and learn, if needed.

It is easy to appreciate the work and research that went into this kit. It is very well thought out, elegantly designed, complete, and most importantly, simple. I don't think I could have done a Subaru conversion, given the amount of extra effort, research and parts gathering I would have had to do. Bostig gave me a complete solution, from beginning to end. I also believe the Zetec is cheaper, more reliable, and easier to maintain than any other conversion. For these reasons, I wouldn't hesitate to recommend Bostig to anyone. I just want to mention that I did this on a 1981 Air Cooled model and it runs amazing. I think Bostig could grab a little bit more of the market by supporting 1980-1982 models. (Just provide instructions on setting up the cooling system, along with a disclaimer). I wish you guys great success with your business. That much effort deserves some reward.

When I got my van I knew that it would need an engine sooner or later. I wanted an engine that gave me more power, reliability, and better fuel economy without springing for the super expensive TDI conversion. I LOVE that this kit lets you put your own sweat (equity) into YOUR van at a price that you can barely buy the Subaru parts for. It is simple enough that a DIY novice could stumble through it and succeed yet challenging enough to bolster the wrenching confidence of even an experienced DIY mechanic. I LOVE that it is 99% FLAPS serviceable and that it runs on regular. My confidence is further underscored by the knowledge that if my engine decides to shit the bed, that I can get a new one delivered to my door with less than 10,00 miles on it for under $600. That's insane confidence. My major lament about falling in love with the Vanagon was thinking that the engine maintenance would break me financially in the long run. Now, I am more worried about the paint than anything else in the van, and my pain is in great shape. Brady and Jim are the definition of professionals. They have built a solid business on a bullet-proof theory that targets a wide swath of the "extended-life" Vangon market. You appeal to the van geek, the DIYer, the budget-worrier, and the buy-American facets of my personality. And number one: you ALWAYS answer your phone (I talked with Brady while he was at a party one night). Unmatched customer service. If I could afford multiple vans and multiple conversions, I would be your number one customer. There are few purchases in my life that have given me (and continue to give me) more DAILY satisfaction than the Bostig conversion. Bostig, through the forum in particular, has connected me to some of the most knowledgeable people in the American VW community in particular Daryl. I had the great pleasure of having him rebuild my transmission (with the limited slip-SICK!) differential and getting to meet him at his home right as he was beginning his chemotherapy. What a great, inspirational member of our collective of Vanagonuts. I feel privileged to have made his acquaintance and have him perform work on my van. So really the Bostig conversion originates with strong founding fathers, but really blossoms in its community.

I really enjoyed the DIY approach, and for someone that had never attempted an engine, transaxle removal, I felt this was a great way to have a guided learning experience. I love the new power, I love being able to do lots of work on my van, and I love to show it off and say, hey, I did this.

Finally, a RELIABLE engine in my Westy. I can count on getting there, and back.

Clean, simple install with improved performance.

I would recommend. Complete, well thought out, efficient.

Kit well constructed, well thought out, tidy install. Drives great..

You guys figured out everything! I loved the videos! I went from no-wrench-skills to someone that can swap and engine and understands what's happening "under the z-bed" of my beloved westy.

People ask me "what made you think that you could do an engine transplant"? I tell them that from my first interacton with Bostig...( I think it was Jim that replied to my e-mail ) they told me that I could do it. With the support that I received........ I did it!! The availability of the support is the most important thing to me. I've been learning as I go......... and I go. You guys had the smartest presentation for conversion that I could find. Thanks

God, where do I start? I guess the best selling point for me was the fact that I could do the entire install myself, and for that we need to thank the plug-and-play electronics. The fact that I saved $5000 or so in labor was quite nice, though the sense of "well I can fix it now" is a definite corollary benefit. The support has been FANTASTIC, and long story short, a friend of mine just bought an 85 and he is putting money away for a Bostig due to my constant, glowing recomendation.

You really get to know your rig after you complete this project. I know have the confidence to turn the key and head out anywhere . The additional power is also a great plus. And the support Bostig provides is outstanding !

Smart, turn key solution. I didn't have to drag through wrecking yards or patch together old parts, to create a Frankenstein Vanagon. All new parts, all designed to work together. I would recommend Bostig to a friend.

The Bostig kit is as advertised the most complete kit available Knowing how much the conversion would cost was important to me. My cost was on the high end with a new crate engine @ just under 6.8k but, I may be including some parts that may not be needed by others, All parts included in the kit are shown on the parts list with a picture and description of each item, every nut, bolt, and washer. Any items necessary for the conversion which are not a part of the kit are listed in the Rock Auto order list or in the instructions Each step of the conversion is broken down into sub kits, complete one step and move on to the next, simple and brilliant. the parts chosen on the Rock Auto order list are commonly available and inexpensive, so if you do make a mistake say, cutting a hose just run down to Autozone and spend $15 on another. There is also peace of mind knowing that if replacement of a part is necessary down the road it is as easy as visiting the nearest auto parts store. Bostig has excellent support, this has proven to be the most valuable part of the conversion. Help is only an e-mail or phone call away. Jim and Brady were very patient with me even though some of my questions were not directly related to the conversion. I would recommend this conversion to anyone with a vanagon/westy/syncro that has an appreciation for it's versatility and would like a dependable easily maintained engine.

Gets rid of all the old engine components and replaces with sturdy, newer, easily repair/replace parts

Bostig Team is always there to help with any question or problem. Experienced and very customer oriented. Pleasant and kinda cool.

Being a novice mechanic, I was pretty unsure about my abilities to complete the project. The instructions and videos answered alot of questions and gave great direction on how to complete the install. With the problems that I did run into, Jim and Brady were patient with me (to say the least) on trouble shooting, and ultimately we resolved all issues. I really enjoyed the celebrity visit on the deck heat panel install by Mr. John Stewart (Tee-Hee!). Since install, I have recommended this conversion to a number of Vanagon owners, and will continue to do so.

Your kit offers the "novice" mechanic sufficient detail to perform the task properly with a high degree of confidence.
