01
What it is
For twenty years the compromise in vanagonland was power or reliability, and we took reliability. The Honda K24Z ends the compromise. More power than the Subaru based swaps that used to lead the class, Honda's legendary durability behind it, and Bostig's engineering underneath it. This is the mounting system that puts a K24Z into any 83-91 Vanagon, with selectable engine height and decklid rise, and it gets the same system treatment that carried the Zetec through a thousand installs.
The manual
The full K24Z build reference is free and public at docs.bostig.com/k24z, available before you spend a dime. It's a living document and says so at the top, growing as the line grows.
02
What it has
The kit is what we send plus off-the-shelf parts, the same philosophy as the Zetec: wearable parts you can buy at any parts counter in the country, because paying shipping/handling twice only destroys customer value.
What we send, and what you can add to it:
- MountingEngine cradle bar, left and right frame rail brackets, driver and passenger motor mount brackets, the mid brackets, and all hardware. This is the base system.
- ExhaustCustom 316 stainless downpipe, flange, U-bend, and rear sections. Added at checkout for $400.
- ResonatorCenter stainless resonator: as quiet as a K24Z gets, no hit on performance. Not for some trailer hitches, ask first. Added with the exhaust for $280.
The base system skips the skidplating for the best weight and price, and it upgrades to the full armored system any time.
03
What it does
It allows a Vanagon to keep up. On-ramps stop being an act of faith, grades stop being a plan, and a loaded camper into a headwind just sort of... drives like a normal vehicle into a headwind. The most output any mainstream conversion offers, at a total cost nothing else touches for the power and reliability you get back. Same philosophy as the Zetec, more punch.
Power, reliability, and the van you already love. Pick three.
My goal in doing this swap was to have a reliable Vanagon, and Bostig’s implementation of the Honda K24z power plant I think will guarantee that. What I didn’t realize is that it would be so much more fun to drive. Since I’ve had it home, I’ve been able to take it on a bunch of little trips around town. It’s no exaggeration to say it drives like a modern car.
Tom Ronan, 91 Vanagon Carat with a Bostig K24zTwo ways to order
Group Build, $1,495. Our scheduled production run in standard finish, and the best value. The next Group Build is scheduled for Spring 2027. You're purchasing a production slot, not a precise delivery date.
Custom Build, $1,845. Your kit in the finish color of your choice, with your build started now instead of waiting for the run. Lead time is typically 6-8 weeks. If you'd rather not wait for the next Group Build, this is your path.
FAQ
What is the cost to complete the install if I buy the base system?
DIYing is *the* cheapest way to get into a K24z. The additional finished cost with a K24z2/3 can start as low as $6,700. The first Bostig K24z install as it stands now was actually done for $6500 (yes, everything, including the engine).
Are you going to be offering a full kit?
Not this season, but perhaps next. We will be offering installs however, email us or call if you're interested. Expect eventual pricing for the full kits to be in the $9500 range. Turnkeys in the $16k range. Most of the parts are simply bought from a list, and you're paying us engineering rates to order, pack, and ship them (twice). This is why we encourage DIY!
Is the K24z cali legal?
Not yet, but it's getting closer! Because of the choice of engine and our exhaust design, it is possible to run *both* CA legal catalytic converters and not delete any emissions system components. This means it is possible to get a BAR ref to allow it (there's never a guarantee). If we have enough interest, pursuing a CARB EO (which we have experience doing) is also an option (which would provide the guarantee). But there is currently no plan for this.
Will the angle changes of the engine and transmission affect syncro driveline angles?
Yes. As with any driveshaft, the angles should match to prevent torsional vibrations and shorten joint life. This can be accomplished with both the front diff angle, and the transmission. The Bostig mounting system can also allow the front transmission mount to be relocated from the body to the front plate, and from hanging, to supported from underneath which lends to further adjustability.
Is there an upgrade path for Bostig Zetec customers to the Honda?
Yes, however it isn't a hardware compatibility that allows it. We will be offering a trade in program. Since the most expensive custom parts for the Zetec are either non-wearable or serviceable, we'll offer refurbished Zetec kits to customers looking to get into a Zetec for less money, that can offset the cost of the Honda for existing customers. No other vendor entertains any such idea.
What is the ground clearance?
On the shop syncro with 27.9" tires, it's 7.5" with no decklid lift, to 11.5" with a full lift. And that's at the skidplate, which can be hit... *not* at an oilpan.
