  • Description

Most Vanagon conversions are a recipe you assemble from forum threads and hope. This isn't that. The Bostig Zetec conversion system is one recipe, refined over twenty years, with over a thousand installs and millions of customer miles proving it out. There's a reason Bostig build threads are famously short, and end with a van that drives.

The kit is what we send plus off-the-shelf parts, and that split is deliberate. Paying shipping/handling twice only destroys customer value, and wearable parts you can buy at any parts counter in the country is the superior choice for long-term ownership.

What we send arrives as named sub-kits. Each one is a chapter of the manual and a stage of your install:

    SK-A
AdapterAdapter plate, multi-position mount adapters, flywheel or flexplate, and hardware
    SK-C
CoolingExpansion tank bracketry, stainless steel coolant manifold, and all the hardware and clamps
    SK-M
MountingThe engine cradle, rear mount, and its hardware
    SK-E
ExhaustManifold adapter, downpipe, full front and rear heat shielding and hardware
    SK-I
IntakeIntake elbow, EGR block-off, brake booster hookup, clamps, and hardware
    SK-W
WiringPurpose-built brand-new fully plug and play main harness, ECU bracket, fuse and distribution panel, alternator and junction box wiring, MIL circuit, and hardware
    SK-In
InstallThe configurations set matched to your van (auto, 2WD, syncro)

The order and names of the sub-kits can be remembered by use of the mnemonic device "ACME - I Win". Unlike ACME however, if Wile E. Coyote had bought a kit from Bostig, he would have been eating roadrunner instead of beating himself up.

Engine management is expertly handled, and that's the part folks underestimate. The tune and the SCT X4 programmer are in the box, the same X4 that sells for $499.99 on its own, that brings remote calibration update and remote diagnostic capabilities so we make sure you're running as designed from day one to year ten.

It gets you back to using the van. You follow the instructions, ask questions when you need to, and end up with the most reliable powerplant a Vanagon can have. Not the most exciting claim in the swap world, sure... but excitement is exactly what you don't want at 11pm in the middle of nowhere. We're making sure the engine swap is just a bump in the road on a much longer, more enjoyable journey with your Vanagon, not a destination itself.

    The manual

The entire install manual is free and public at docs.bostig.com/zetec available before you spend a dime. That's not generosity, it's confidence.

    From customers

After an unusually troublesome subaru EJ22 experience, I decided to take the leap and try something else. I'm glad I did. The Bostig kit is ridiculously complete - every nut, bolt, washer, and hose clamp is accounted for. The wiring harness, as advertised, is completely plug and play. No cutting, no splicing, no problem.

Prior to doing the 2.0 conversion I had never changed my own oil, and couldn't tell a PS pump from an alternator. Bostig assured me I could do this and they were right. I turned every wrench myself on this conversion, learned a ton, and had a lot of fun.

My van ('84 full Westy) is a completely different vehicle now. Reliable, clean running, and I can pass others while going uphill in 3rd gear! The total conversion time was about a week for me, but this includes about 3 days of engine compartment cleaning, undercoating, and other repairs while I was in there.

There are about thirty more of these, and a handful of longer trip stories, on our customer pages.

    Two ways to order

Group Build, $6,795. Our scheduled production run in standard finish, and the best value. Reserve your slot with a 20% deposit; the balance is due when your kit is ready to ship. The next Group Build is scheduled for Spring 2027. You're reserving a production slot, not a delivery date.

Custom Build, $7,995. Your kit in the finish color of your choice, with your build started now instead of waiting for the run. Reserve with a 20% deposit; balance due when your kit is ready to ship. If you'd rather not wait for the next Group Build, this is your path.

Deposits are non-refundable but transferable. You must read the requirements, prerequisites, contained in the factory manual and the terms and conditions before ordering.
